“Church Attendance:  Our Palm Sunday congregation numbered 153 and our Easter Sunday congregation numbered 156.  This looks like a record, and we rejoice. ...”

“Confirmation Gowns:  Confirmation robes are being made this year, and will remain the property of the congregation.  The parents of the confirmation class have contributed part of the cost.  Contributions from interested members of the congregation and friends are needed to defray the additional amount.  Please speak to  or call Mrs. Matthies, LE7—2173.”

1963 Mission Board Proposal:

“The estimated total cost is to be $116,400. which includes furnishings, architects fees and interest on construction loans.   The congregation is to raise $39,400. in cash from pledges by January 1, 1966.  To add to this we have $32,000 from the sale of the church.  We are to arrange a first mortgage commercially of $22,000. at 6% amortized over at least 15 years (preferably 20).  A second mortgage of $30,000. will be carried by the Board of American Missions.”

“Pastor Sacristy”

          The Pastor’s sacristy must be adjacent to the sanctuary on the side occupied by the pulpit, with a door leading from the second level of the sanctuary.  It must be a private  room set aside for the pastor’s use alone.  It must have a worshipful atmosphere;  be provided with facilities for preparatory prayer; storage for vestments, and sufficient room for vesting; and provision for hanging regular garments.

          It is desirable that a second entry give access to a rest room which also has access through another entrance.”

April 29, 1963.  –“a letter from Church Council to inactive members”

          “You are no doubt aware that our Pastor is leaving Woodstock to answer a call to become Executive Secretary for Parish Education and Youth Work for the Eastern Canada synod.  The congregation has called another pastor and we are hopeful that he will accept and arrive in Woodstock early this summer.”

          *this letter was from Council and Pastor V. N. Cronmiller from the parsonage at 39 Fairview Crescent.

 

Sunday, May 26th, 1963.  Recommendations to Bethany members from Church Council:

“1.  That the split level home built by A. Truman on Edgewood Drive, the second house after the vacant lot next to the church site, be purchased as a parsonage. ...

2.  That the house at 39 Fairview Crescent be sold.

          If there is anyone in the congregation who wishes to purchase a three-bedroom home at this time, it would be to their advantage to deal directly with Church Council.

“Following this afternoon’s groundbreaking service at our new church site there will be an informal reception for members, visitors and friends at the parsonage, 196 Edgewood Drive.  Refreshments will be served on the patio.”       

1965.          “The Luther League of Bethany have been asked by the executive of the Lutheran Church Men to prepare a radio play entitled  ‘The Coffee House’ for the Lutheran Church Men’s Retreat—Workshop to be held in Bethany on October 30th.”

“On a motion by W. Thrower, seconded by R. MacKenzie,  the Council voted to separate the committees on Stewardship, Evangelism and Social Ministry into individual  units for the coming year.”

February 22nd, 1967.  *special Council Meeting  --for the purpose of discussing a brief presented by members of the Adult Education Class, represented by Malcolm Finch, Ruth Finch, Donna Anderson and Ken Riehl:

--established two conditions for consideration of further action:

1.”That a full disclosure of the indebtedness of the Pastor, both in total and in specific itemized form, be prepared.”

2.”That the Pastor agree in principal to the appointment of a financial manager.”

Thursday, March 9, 1967. *Special Meeting of Church Council, chaired by Dr. Lotz for the purpose of calling a new pastor.

“Dr. Lotz outlined the procedure to be followed in extending a call, pointing out that the Board is required to take the initiative in recommending  a name to submit  to the congregation.  Only one name can be submitted and a 2/3 majority ballot of the congregation constitutes a call.  Two secret ballots resulted in the decision to call Pastor Thomas Orr.”

“Pastor Mosher of Tavistock is to be appointed vice—pastor for the interim period.”

April 6, 1967.  Regular Council Meeting

Under “New Business:

                   Chairman A. Campbell read the official call to Pastor William E. Kurschinski.”

Under “Committee Reports:

                   --Worship and Music:  Malcolm Finch was elected acting chairman.    ... Steve Hucsko and Tom Sneyd are being considered as instructor and supervisor of acolytes.  Bethany will be represented this year in the Music Festival. ...”

Thurs., May 4, 1967.Regular Council Meeting

“Malcolm Finch announced that the Junior choir had received 82 points and came second in the Junior Liturgical Class in the Music Festival.

Under “Committee Reports:
Property:  E. Chambers reporting for Property Committee, made the following recommendations:

1.   –that a storage shed be obtained for lawnmower and other equipment,

2.   –that two mirrors be purchased, one new organ mirror, the other a full-length mirror for the closet in the pastor’s study.”

Special Council Meeting, Friday, May 5th, 1967.

“A special meeting, with Dr. Lotz presiding, was held on the above date for the purpose of extending a pastoral call to the Reverend Clyde Wentzell of Spryfield, Nova Scotia.  The motion to adopt was made by A. Thompson, seconded by M. Mortimer and was carried by a vote of 74 to 2.”

 

June 1, 1967. Regular Council Meeting

“The secretary was instructed to send Thank You cards to Mrs. Goddard and Mrs. John Meckbach for looking after CGIT meetings at Bethany...”

Under “Correspondence:

“ ... a letter from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association requesting financial support.  It was moved by V. Muth, seconded by R. Goddard that this letter be disregarded.  Motion carried.”

 

*Letters to and from Pastor Clyde Wentzell at Church of the Reformation, Spryfield, Nova Scotia from Council Chairman Arnold Campbell dated July 5 and and July 10, 1967.  This was the initial contact with Pastor Wentzel who requested information regarding the parsonage , church building layout and map of Woodstock.

“Dear Pastor Wentzell,

                   It is indeed a great pleasure and pride that I can use the heading ‘Pastor’ and, God willing, it is my sincere hope that it will remain ‘Pastor Wentzell’ for a long time.”
